Rediscovering Singapore Through Watercolour
Share
There are many versions of Singapore that you might be familiar with.. the city skyline, colourful HDB blocks, or the familiar sights of everyday life.
I grew up in the heartland areas of Serangoon and Sengkang, where there were no shophouses around me. It was only after discovering watercolours, while searching for subjects in Singapore to paint, that I began noticing them.
The more I sketched and painted, the more drawn I became to these heritage buildings. I had lived in Singapore for over 30 years, yet I had never really stopped to admire their beauty.
Much of my work begins with these quiet observations.
I’m often drawn to places that feel lived in rather than iconic. Open windows, faded paint, uneven shadows, traces of time and familiarity. They may not be famous landmarks, but they hold a kind of emotional memory that feels deeply Singaporean to me.
Over time, I’ve realised I’m less interested in painting Singapore as a destination, and more interested in capturing the beauty hidden within its details and quieter corners.
Through my paintings, I hope to help others notice these moments too, especially the ones we often walk past without seeing.
